Near East University has developed artificial intelligence that can diagnose

Artificial intelligence algorithms developed by Near East University can make a diagnosis in a short time by analyzing Covid-19 PCR tests. The system, which has been determined to work with 100 percent accuracy by experienced molecular microbiology experts, can categorize PCR results as positive, low positive, negative and uncertain.

Analyzing the results of PCR tests, which are considered the gold standard in the diagnosis of COVID-19, had put a lot of strain on health systems all over the world during the pandemic due to the intensity they caused. In order to obtain results in a short time, the determination of the results of PCR tests, which create a very large burden on the laboratory staff in particular, also requires experienced personnel.

Artificial intelligence algorithms developed by Near East University analyze PCR test data with an interface that can be integrated into PCR devices, allowing the test result to be determined in seconds without the need for human intervention.

Deputy Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ, one of the researchers of DESAM Research Institute, Near East University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. Buket Baddal and Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Cyprus International University. Assoc. Dr. The study co-designed by Emre Ozbilge is of great importance in terms of rapidly initiating isolation and treatment processes of patients by shortening the analysis and reporting processes of COVID-19 PCR tests. The artificial intelligence application developed can also be used in possible outbreaks that may occur in the future.

It is able to categorize PCR results as positive, low positive, negative and uncertain

With the developed deep learning algorithm, the fluorescence radiation data taken from the PCR device is uploaded to the pre-trained program for each patient. The artificial intelligence system, which is trained with the PCR results of hundreds of patients, can identify the graphs of patient samples and give the result in seconds.

The artificial intelligence system developed at Near East University using a multi-layered neural network model is able to categorize PCR data as positive, low positive, negative or uncertain without laboratory personnel. In case of uncertain results, the system warns the staff that the patient sample should be re-studied.

The system, which is provided by experienced molecular microbiology experts at the development stages, can provide results with a 100 percent accuracy rate. Thanks to the system, it is aimed to ensure efficient use of laboratory personnel by reducing the workload of laboratory personnel during pandemic periods, when the sample flow is very intense.

The artificial intelligence system developed is the 32nd artificial intelligence system developed in Portugal. It was shared with the scientific world at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Assoc. Prof. at the European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ECCMID), the 32nd of which was held in Portugal this year and is the largest microbiology congress in Europe. Dr. The study presented by Buket Baddal was received with great interest by the microbiology community. The Congress, which brought together experts in the field of infectious diseases and microbiology, new technologies are discussed where “COVID-19 Diagnosis: New and newer” session presented to study it is to integrate and apply different pathogens laboratories all over the world by scientists in terms of acclaim it has received.

The study was also included in the special issue of “Applied Artificial Intelligence” published in October 2022 of the journal “Applied Sciences” belonging to the Multidisciplinary Digital Publishing Institute, one of the prestigious publishing houses, and shared with the entire scientific community.

Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ: "Our artificial intelligence application, which determines the PCR test results with an accuracy rate of 100 percent, has attracted great attention from the scientific world.”

Deputy Rector of Near East University Prof. Dr. If Sanlidag Tamer COVID-19th in the process from day one multi-faceted in a way they were conducting scientific research by saying, “our efforts to scientists within the University, COVID-19 products that will enable them to be managed more effectively to the process of when you are converting scientific articles with the results of our work, we continued to share it with the world of science,” he said.

Reminding that Near East University scientists have published 375 articles in the world's leading scientific publications during the COVID-19 process, Prof. Dr. Sanlidag, “PCR tests and analyze the results with 100% accuracy to determine our artificial intelligence applications, Portugal, European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and infectious diseases shared with the scientific community. At the same time, we published our study in the ‘Applied Artificial Intelligence’ special issue of the journal Applied Sciences,”he said.

Assoc. Dr. Buket Baddal“ "With the artificial intelligence algorithms we have developed, we will be prepared for epidemics that may occur in the future.”

One of the researchers of DESAM Research Institute, Near East University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Microbiology and Clinical Microbiology Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. If Baddal bouquet COVID-19 pandemic in an intensive way with PCR tests in our lives that have been used in the identification of many pathogens that cause infectious diseases by saying, “We developed the application of artificial intelligence in the future, the new factors that can cause infectious diseases and pandemics that may arise is to be used in the diagnosis of viruses,” he said. Assoc. Dr. Baddal said, "With the COVID-19 pandemic, it had become clear how unprepared health systems were for outbreaks like this. With the artificial intelligence algorithms we have developed, we will be prepared for epidemics that may occur in the future. By diagnosing the disease early, we can isolate these people early and prevent the spread of the disease in society,” he said.
